What is Hypnosis?
The easiest way to understand hypnosis is to think about situations when the hypnotic state occurs naturally and for children this will be many times during the day.
A child is in a hypnotic state when he/she is absorbed in a computer game, watching a TV programme intently, engrossed in a book, daydreaming etc. If you try to talk to your child when he/she is totally involved in these types of activities, he/she will appear not to hear you or may have a delayed response. The time immediately before sleep can also be described as a hypnotic state.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy uses the induction of the hypnotic state through relaxation or focused concentration. This enables for the suggestions and positive messages related to specific issues or concerns the child is experiencing, to be accepted in a way that can lead to a change in behaviour, thoughts and feelings.
How Can Hypnotherapy Help?
Shona may use hypnotherapy as only a part of a whole psychological approach to help a child overcome difficulties. When she feels that this would be the most appropriate approach to help a child she will discuss this in detail with parents and the child and is always happy for a parent to be present during a hypnotherapy session. There will usually be a minimum of two sessions. If more are needed this will be decided together between Shona, the parents and the child/teenager.
