Approach to helping families with teenagers:
The initial appointment will usually be in a clinic. During this session, the Psychologist will meet with the teenager and parents together to discuss the issues of concern and through this assessment she will identify the main areas of work and outline, in a clear therapy plan, how to proceed.
Individual sessions with the teenager may be the most
appropriate starting point for therapy. Issues will have been
identified through the initial assessment in the first session and,
with the teenager’s agreement, these issues will be discussed
further during the one-to-one sessions. Therapeutic work will
continue with the teenager alone, incorporating regular reviews
with the family.
Family sessions involving parents and teenager, and occasionally other family members, is an alternative approach that may be recommended by the Psychologist. For most cases, a combination of individual and family sessions are likely to form a part of the therapeutic intervention
plan.
